CLEARWATER, FL, USA – After three full days of competition at the WBSC Junior Women’s Softball World Championship, the playoff picture is starting to come together. Nations are battling to finish among the top two in their respective pools to advance into the championship round in the quest For the Title of World Champion.
Pool A is still too close to call with four teams in the hunt for two spots. In Pool B, Japan has booked their ticket to the Championship Round, though their seed is still undetermined. In Pool C, Puerto Rico and Czech Republic have advanced with tomorrow determining who will finish with the #1 seed. In the final pool, Canada has claimed one of the two spots.
POOL A
No. 17 Philippines (3-1) v Turkey (0-5)
10-0 (4 innings)
Philippines easily handled Turkey in the first game of the day to improve their record to 3-1. The Asian nation had the bats going as they scored eight runs in the 1st and 2 runs in the second for a 10-0 win. Clean-up batter Juliet Omul led all batters going 2-for-3, including a double and a triple to drive in two runs. Kaith Jalandoni pitched the no-hitter, striking out seven and walking only one batter.

USA secured an 8-0 victory over Italy in the five innings. The Americans put the game out of reach in the second inning thanks to singles by Mary Iakopo and Nicole Bates, and a double by Madilyn Nickles. Mariah Lopez earned the win pitching the no-hitter and striking out nine.

No. 17 Philippines (4-1) v South Africa (1-2)

The Philippines won their second game of the day over South Africa, leaving them in 3rd place in Pool A after three days. Reese Guevarra led the game off with a double to left field and scored two batters later for the early 1-0 lead. No further runs were scored until the 7th inning, even though the Junior Blu Girls reached base in each inning. Lyca Blanco led the inning off with a single and made her way home after two hits and a passed ball. With two outs, Juliet Omul hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in the third run of the game. Lange Sierra earned her first win of the world championship pitching the complete game allowing only one hit.

No. 20 Guatemala (1-4) v Turkey (0-6)

Guatemala played their entire team in the lopsided 18-1 win over Turkey, giving them their first win of the world championship. Ana Morales led all batters in the game going 4-for-4, including a double, three singles, and four RBIs, plus one stolen base. Nichole McClendon, Gabriela Guzman, Josselline Monge, and Maria Martinez also recorded multiple hits. McClendon earned the win, pitching the final two innings allowing one run on one hit while striking out three.

Chinese Taipei blew out South Africa 14-0 in the final game of the day as the offense exploded scoring 12 runs in the 5th inning. Szu-Chi Chu went 4-for-4 at the plate including a triple, while Chia-Hui Ko doubled and homered. Yi-Fan Ho, Yu-Ting Chen, Tzu-Lin Chiang, and Kai-En Lin also had multiple hits in the lopsided game. Ya-Ting Tu earned the win pitching three perfect innings, including three strike outs.

No. 8 Netherlands (1-3) v No. 37 Israel (0-3)

Netherlands earned their first win of this year’s world championship, defeating Israel in a lopsided three inning game. The Dutch scored two runs in the 1st, blew the game open in the 2nd to score 15 runs, and closed the game out plating five runs in the 3rd inning. Rhowan Stuart led all batters going 3-for-3 with a home run, while driving in three runs. Loy Uchenna Jong, Feline Poot, and Onaisha Franka were also credited with multiple RBIs. Danielle ten Donkelaar pitched the no-hitter, striking out four to earn the win.

Australia improved to 4-1 to remain in 2nd place in Pool B with a 12-1 win over Bahamas. The Aussies had Antonia Cooper figured out, generating 12 hits over the five inning game. Maddison Schofield led all batters going 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and drove in three runs. Lamb Kandra earned the win in her four innings of work, giving up only two hits while fanning 10 batters.

No. 21 Peru (2-2) v No. 37 Israel (0-4)
16-2 (4 innings)
Peru improved to .500 with a lopsided 16-2 win over Israel in four innings. The South Americans smashed the ball in the 1st scoring 11 runs, followed by two runs in the 2nd and three runs in the 3rd. Israel got on the board in the bottom of the 1st scoring two runs but could not make a dent in Peru’s lead. Peru’s Thais Uyema legged out double and a triple, while Pamela Hirakata, Michelle Iparraguirre, Alessandra Rico, and Yaritza La Rosa each had doubles. Michelle Moromizato earned the win pitching 2.1 innings with two hits, walks, runs, and strike outs each to the 12 batters she faced.

Netherlands jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated Bahamas 4-0. Onaisha Franka hit a lead-off single and was driven in off a Feline Poot sacrifice fly. Rhowan Stuart walked to reach base only to be driven in by Jong Loy Uchenna in the 1st inning. No further runs were scored in the game until the 7th inning when Ismay Poot singled with one out and later scored on a defensive error. Charlotte Drijvers then hit a two-out double to drive in Stuart for her second run of the game to give the Europeans the 4-0 win.

Japan is the first team to advance to the Championship Round as they defeated Brazil 9-0. Eri Shimoyama led all batters in the game going 3-for-3, including one home run, while batting in three. Urara Fujimoto, Shino Satake, Chisora Mihara, Hiroyo Hattori, and Iroha Suwa each singled in the game to complete the Japanese offense. Kirara Hoshika earned her second win of the championship, pitching three innings allowing only two hits while striking out one.

Puerto Rico continued their winning streak, defeating rival Dominican Republic 7-4 to remain undefeated and atop Pool C. Jaimie Hoover was hot at the plate, hitting two home runs. Kayla Jensen also had multiple hits in the game, including a triple and RBI. Allison Marcano earned the win pitching five innings giving up two hits and four walks, while striking out seven.

New Zealand earned their first win of this year’s world championship as they defeated India 11-0 in 5 innings. Pallas Potter hit two home runs in the game, as she and Mikayla Lewin each drove in three runs. Denva Shaw-Tait, Marama Makea, and Mereana Makea also had multiple hits. Terrey Brittany earned the win, pitching the complete game allowing four hits, while striking out four.

The Europeans opened the game scoring one run, then added three more in the 4th and topped off the scoreboard with three runs in the 6th. Veronika Klimplova tripled, while Michaela Regnerova and Kristyna Mala each doubled. Katelyn Humhej pitched the complete game allowing three hits and striking out one.

Janiliz Rivera hit a home run and Kayla Jensen tripled while Adriana Otero led the team’s offense going 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs. Tiana Hernandez recorded the win in the complete game performance, allowing only one hit and fanning five.

Canada improved to 3-0 by defeating Korea this morning to remain atop of Pool D. Alysse Volpe led off Canada’s at-bats with a single to left-field; a ground out advanced her to third and was then driven in off Grace Messmer’s hit to center. In the 2nd inning, Canada added another four runs on three hits to bring the game to 5-0. Korea tried to stage a comeback in the 7th but was only able to score one run. Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage pitched the complete game to earn the win, limiting Korea to four hits, while striking out seven.

Mexico improved to .500 in the Pool D preliminary round robin with a win over Ireland. The Latin Americans scored 8 runs on 10 hits in the 5 inning game. Madelyn Ruffin, Diana Arcega, and Paola Quintero each had two hits in the game, while five batters recorded RBIs. Carolina Zamudio earned the win as she entered the game in the 2nd inning in relief to pitch four innings allowing two hits and striking out two others.

In their second game of the day, Korea beat their continental counterpart 2-1 in a close match that required extra innings. The game was scoreless for four innings before China jumped in front first, scoring their only run of the game. Korea tied the game up in the 6th, and won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 8th. Hye Won Jeong and Seo Young Jeong each scored runs in the game. Choe Yeon Ji pitched the complete game to earn the win, allowing five hits, while striking out three.

Canada won a nail-biter over Great Britain to remain undefeated. The win advances them to the Championship Round, though they will have to wait until tomorrow for their seed placement to be determined.
Great Britain jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning, but Canada chipped away scoring one run in both the 2nd and 3rd to tie the game, before taking the lead in the 6th plating two. Great Britain rallied in the 7th with the go-ahead run at the plate, but could not capitalize. Canada’s Maria Palmegiani and Amanda Janes each doubled, while Alysse Volpe, Grace Messmer, and Palmegiani recorded multiple hits in the win. Brianna Aguilar-Beaucage received the win allowing four hits and striking out four in three innings of work.
