CLEARWATER, FL, USA – The 12th WBSC Junior Women’s Softball World Championship has completed two full days of preliminary round-robin games. Nations are battling to finish among the top two in their respective groups to advance into the championship round in the quest For the Title of World Champion.
At the end of the day, eight nations remain undefeated, while Peru earned their first-win ever at a WBSC Junior Women’s Softball World Championship. Though the round-robin phase is half-way over, the championship is no closer to being able to determine who are the favorites to advance to the playoffs.
POOL A
No. 12 Italy (1-1) v Turkey (0-3)
13-1 (4 innings)
Italy earned their first win of this year’s junior world championship, defeating newcomer Turkey 13-1 in four innings. Susanna Soldi led all batters going 2-for-2 with two singles and four runs batted in. Sara Riboldi and Chiara Biasi teamed up to pitch the no-hitter to strike out nine.

Philippines blanked Guatemala 5-0 to earn their second win of the junior world championship. The Asian nation scored two runs in the third and three more runs in the fifth to earn the win. Mary Maguad recorded two hits in the game, including a double, while Juliet G. Omul drove in two. Royevel L Palma pitched the complete game shut-out, only allowing two hits.

Chinese Taipei remained undefeated earning their third win of the championship in a one-sided game against Turkey. Yi-Fan Ho led all batters going 3-for-3 with a double and driving in four runs. Yi Yen, Huei-Hsuan Chen, and Pei-Yun Yu each recorded two hits in the game. Yi-Shan Yang and Ya-Ting Tu teamed up to pitch the no-hitter, while striking out five batters.

A close scoreless game through four innings, Italy turned on the heat to earn a win over Guatemala. In the top of the 5th, Italy brought in three runners but Guatemala also got on the board scoring one. In the 6th inning, the Europeans added two more runs for the 5-1 victory. Andrea Howard and Giorgia Migliorini each doubled, while Sofia Cecchin (2), Alessandra Rotondo (2), and Susanna Soldi pushed runners across the plate. Sara Riboldi pitched a solid complete game striking out 10, while only allowing two hits.

USA continued on this quest to repeat as Junior Women’s World Champions remaining undefeated after blanking South Africa 15-0 in three innings. Madilyn Nickles, Baylee Klingler, and Alexis Allan each hit the ball out of the park, as the entire line-up reached base on hits. Hannah Adams and Nickles contributed to the slug fest, driving in four runs each. Juarez Giselle was one walk away from pitching a perfect game, but she still managed to keep all batters at bay by not allowing a hit and striking out five.

Brazil scored first and never looked back, crossing home in every inning of the lopsided 5-inning game against Bahamas. Rebeca Diniz, Tammy Shiroma, Beatrice Nakae, Alissa Usami, and Luciana Nakamura each recorded multiple hits, while Isabella Vasconcelos belted a triple. Shiroma and Priscilla Shiomatsu teamed up to keep Bahamas at bay, striking out a combined eight batters and only one walk with two earned runs.

Japan has won their third lopsided game of the World Championship, this time against Netherlands, 8-1. Japan scored one run at their initial at-bat, but Netherlands tied it up one inning later. Japan took the lead again in the third and never looked back as they scored two more in the 5th and four in the 6th. Urara Fujimoto led all batters going 2-for-4, with a double and one RBI, while crossing the plate twice.

The Junior Spirit continued their winning streak to remain undefeated, though it took them three innings to cross the plate before they cruised to an 8-1 win over Brazil. Montana Kearnes blasted a two-run shot, while Natasha Holt recorded three RBIs in the game. Shannon Keevers led all batters in the game going 4-for-4, stealing three bases and scoring twice. Gabrielle Plain was credited with the win, pitching a solid four innings, allowing only one hit and striking out seven.

Peru earned their first win in junior world championship history, defeating Bahamas 8-2. Both teams are playing in their first junior world championship, though Bahamas enjoyed their first win yesterday. Peru got out front early and never looked back, scoring two runs in the 1st and six runs in the 2nd before their bats went silent. Natalie Alegria led all batters going 3-for-4, with a single, double, and home run, all while driving in six runs. Pamela Hirakata also recorded two hits in the game. Michelle Iparraguirre earned the win as she limited Bahamas to four hits and fanning nine batters.

Japan scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, a sacrifice fly to right field drove the winning run home. Japan now remains as the sole undefeated team in Pool B with two games remaining for both teams.

Puerto Rico continued their winning streak, defeating newcomer India 8-0 in five innings. The Caribbean nation put the game out of reach in the first inning as they scored seven runs. Nachaly Rivera led all batters going 2-for-4, with a single, a triple, and 3 RBIs, while Natalia Rodriguez also had multiple hits in the game. Alexina Mora and Barbara Rodriguez teamed up to pitch the one-hitter, allowing only one more batter than the game’s minimum.

Czech Republic and New Zealand battled until the end before the Europeans scored three runs in the top of the 7th to remain undefeated as they upset New Zealand 7-4. Gabriela Slaba and Natalie Kopicova each had three hits, while Tereza Novotna and Michaela Regnerova had two hits each. Tereza Kubicova hit a triple for her only hit of the game. For New Zealand, Paiton Koko-Lutau (2), Pallas Potter, (1), and Marama Makea (1) drove in runs but were unable to capture the win.

Argentina earned their first win of this year’s junior world championship defeating newcomers India in a tight 2-0 match. The South American’s got on the board quick scoring one run in the first, but did not score again until the 5th inning. Sofia Grimaz doubled to score Alba Camara Páez in the 1st and Camara Paez pushed a single (her second hit of the game) to the right-field line to score Mercedes Grimolizzi in the 5th on the way to their victory.

Dominican Republic scored all the game’s runs in the 4th inning as Jessica Rivera and Lidia Peralta crossed the plate on their way to a 2-0 win over New Zealand. Rivera started the inning off with a double and scored off a wild pitch. Peralta was able to make her way to third following a walk, steal, and wild pitch only to be driven in by Jayla Perez’s double to left-field. Katherine Sugilio pitched the complete game shut-out, allowing three hits while striking out four.

Canada blanked Ireland 8-0 in five innings for its second win. Sarah Benn connected for a pair of doubles and drove in three runs with Amanda Janes added a two-run home run. Elizabeth Murphy earned the five-inning shutout win in the pitcher’s circle.

Mexico evened their record by blanking Korea 7-0. It took the Latin Americans some time to get going, but their run count kept increasing as the game went on scoring one run in the 2nd, two runs in the 3rd, and finally 4 runs in the 4th. Nancy Rocha was the only player in the game who recorded multiple hits, while Quinn de Avila and Suzannah Brookshire each drove in two runners.

Chelsie Robison made two diving catches in right field and scored the winning run as Great Britain earned a tension-filled 2-1 win over Ireland. Great Britain scored their first run in the bottom of the 3rd when Katie Burge hit a one-out triple and was driven in off a Megan Parno single. They then added an insurance run in the 5th when Alana Snow singled to score Robison. Ireland score in the 6th but it was not enough to overcome the 2-1 lead.

China was able to stave off Mexico in an important must-win game, winning 5-3. Xiaomin Lu led all batters hitting three singles and scoring one run. Jiaxin Xie, Mengru Wang, Huiqi Yang, and Bing Han also recorded multiple hits in the game. Xiaofan Jin came in relief in the 3rd inning to pitch five innings, allowing only two hits while striking out 8 to earn to win. For Mexico, Eliyah Flores led her team in offense, hitting one home run while batting in three.
