Black Sox Nukunuku and Rona play in 100th WBSC softball game

WHITEHORSE, Yukon, Canada – Brad Rona, 41, joined captain Nathan Nukunuku in the hundred club in an 8-1 win over Denmark on Thursday — a day after Nukunuku reached three figures.

Both men made their New Zealand debuts in the late 1990s and are chasing their fourth gold medals at their record-equaling sixth world championship.

Black Sox manager Jayden Moore said the pair join two other greats, including four-time world champions Thomas Makea (140) and Jarrad Martin (131), in the 100-test club.

Rona has been a regular starter in Whitehorse, but he came off the bench to drive in a run in the Black Sox’s  win over a Denmark team coached by Nukunuku’s brothers Israel and Dion (a former Black Sox gold medallist).

After six days of competition, Rona has gone 3 for 11 with 3 RBIs, while Nukunuku has gone 7 for 11, including two home runs.

Nathan Nukunuku is also trying to advance his athlete career by running as the male athlete representative that sits on the WBSC Softball Division Board of Directors. Elections results will be announced on the final day of the Men’s World Championship.
