Serbia promotes Softball at National Youth and Sports Fair

BELGRADE (Serbia) — The sport of softball, via the Serbia Softball Federation, was featured at the Serbia’s National Sport Fair — in Belgrade.  The sports festival was organized by the Serbian Sport Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and ran from 25-27 November. The three-day event featured 90 national sports and anti-doping organizations, along with sport equipment manufacturers.

The fair offered the opportunity to expose softball to the over 60,000 visitors who were in attendance. The softball booth featured softball equipment and educational brochures. Also included was an area for visitors to try their hand at throwing and hitting.

Federation officials were able to meet with the Olympic Committee vice-president Ivan Todorov to update them on the state of softball throughout Serbia.

Serbia looks to build on past successes

Softball is fairly new to Serbia, with the national federation only being formed in 2005. Most clubs are located in the capital city of Belgrade, but also in Subotica, Novi Sad, Sombor and Sremska Kamenica.

On an international level, Serbia made their world championship debut finishing 25th in this year’s WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship in Surrey, Canada. Serbia has also participated in eight European Championships in five different divisions. Their silver medal at the 2010 Minime Championships is their highest finish.
