Baseball, Softball youth take part in Puerto Rico Women’s Olympic Festival

SAN JUAN — The fourth edition of the multi-sport Women’s Olympic Festival featured the youth and future athletes of Puerto Rico.  Surrounded by hundreds of girls seven years-old and older, representing 27 various sports of the Olympic Movement, Puerto Rican Olympic Committee President Sara Rosario Vélez officially opened the women’s festival.

“The Women’s Olympic Festival is an event that gives continuity to the development of women with special attention. The call is for girls from 7 years of age to [become] representatives of our national adult selections. This edition will be special because we come from an Olympic cycle that the woman stood out on a sports and administrative level. It is a motivation that inspires us to pass on to the next generations.”

Softball competition featured U-13, U-16, and U-19 all-stars

The Puerto Rico Softball Federation participated in the Women’s Olympic Festival with its traditional All Star Games of the youth categories U-13, U-16 and U-19. The players were selected according to their statistics during the season from September 2016 to January 2017.

U-19:
Team A (Maunabo, Roosevelt, Reeds, San Juan, Richmond, San Lorenzo and Stream) dominated 7-2 Team B (Ponce, Guayanilla, Guaynabo, Hatillo, Comerío, Barceloneta and Salinas).

U-16:
Team A (Asofem, San Juan, Guaynabo, Salinas, Guayama and San Lorenzo) also defeated Team B (Jueyeras, Arecibo, Barceloneta, Hatillo, Guanica, and Juana Diaz) 7-2.

U-13:
Team B (Ponce, Guayama, Salinas and Guaynabo) dominated the Team A (Coamo, Illescanas and Maunabo) 15-3.

Puerto Rico, currently #7 for women’s softball and unranked in women’s baseball in the WBSC World Rankings, is preparing for the start of the National Women’s Fastpitch in May with a total of 13 teams.
