Today marked the end of the preliminary round robin. For teams finishing in the top two of their pool, they advanced to the Championship round robin. The remaining teams were allocated to the Placement round robin.
Australia finished the preliminary round robin the second position after defeating Serbia 13-0. Vanessa Stokes was perfect on the mound and Chelsea Forkin was the best of the Aussie line up with the bat, going 3 for 3 with a monster home run. Netherlands led the entire game to defeat the Philippines 7-2. The Netherlands got on the board first as Chantal Versluis hit a two-run home run. Three consecutive flyouts ended the inning 2-0. In the third inning, the Netherlands struck again scoring two more runs off a Maxime Van Dalen home run. The fourth brought another pair of runs as Britt Vonk’s single drove in Shareday Christina and Anne Blaauwgeers. The Philippines decided to add two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Queeny Sabobo led the inning off with a double. Shaira Damasing pushes a single through, scoring Sabobo. Damasing then advanced to third following a defensive error and later scored off a Chelsea Suitos single to bring the game to 6-2. In the final inning, the Netherlands added an insurance run when Virginie Anneveld singled to score Versluis. After the completion of the first round robin, the Netherlands finishes with three wins and top their pool, while the Philippines ends with a two win and one loss record. Mexico finished at top Pool C with a 13-0 victory over Switzerland. Diana Reyes and Maria Hernandez each hit a home run, while Victoria Vidales, Alyssa Castro, and Sierra Rodriguez also contributed to the lopsided game with RBIs. New Zealand wins in extra innings in an 8-7 thriller against Italy to win their pool on Day 3. The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before both teams started exchanging runs. In the top of the third, New Zealand’s Ellie Cooper hit a two-run homerun for the 2-0 lead. But Italy answered right back with four runs of themselves. Elisa Grifagno hit a one-out single to score Priscilla Brandi. The next batter Eva Trevisan then hit a single to score Alice Parisi. After a strikeout, Andrea Montanari connected for a single to score Grigagno and Trevisan, bringing the score to 4-2. White Sox Jennifer Feret sailed the ball out of the park in the top of the sixth to tie the game up. But Italy did not want to share the score and watched as Lara Buila hit a two-run home run making the score 6-4. Facing their last at-bat opportunity, New Zealand scored two runs to tie and stay in the game. Kingsley Avery and pinch-runner Charlotte Pointon were driven in by Hailey Breakwell double. Italy was unable to break the 6-6 tie and the game advanced to extra innings. In the eighth, each team exchanged runs. New Zealand’s Mikayla Werahiko, who started the inning on second, was driven in by a Kingsley Avery double. Italy’s Sara Avanzi then singled to score Trevision to tie the game again at 7-7 and into the ninth. A Breakwell single scored Cooper for an 8-7 New Zealand lead. With two outs and Italy’s backs to the wall, Parisi steps up to the plate with Buila on third. Parisi fouls off 14 balls before hitting back to the pitcher to end the game, giving New Zealand the win. Peru enjoyed their first win as they cruised to a 10-3 win over Kenya in their final preliminary round game. Monica Chu led all batters with 3 RBIs, while Alessandra Mendiburo and Vianca Gozzer each had doubles. Greece shut-out Guatemala for a 2-0 and claimed their first win of the world championship. In the second inning, Loren Stavrou reached base due to a fielding error allowing Evangelia Stefatou to score. Greece extended their lead in the sixth when Tselsi Lisikatos led the inning off with a home run. It was three up three down for Guatemala in the top of the seventh giving Greece the 2-0 win. Stavrou threw a complete game one-hitter and nine strikeouts. Greece finishes the first round of pool play with a 1 win and 2 loss record, while Guatemala ends with three losses. It took all seven innings, but China cruised to a 9-1 victory over Cuba to win their pool in the preliminary round. Cuba struck first in the first inning when Maylin Bauta score following a series of defensive errors. But China settled down preventing Cuba any hits or walks the remainder of the game. Yi Lu led China scoring three runs and three hits, including one home run. Minghan Yuan and Jia Xu also hit home runs in the game. Puerto Rico finished the preliminary round atop their pool as they shutout Ecuador 7-0 in five innings. Five Puerto Rican batters had hits with Aleimalee Lopez and Monica Santos each having doubles. After having to come back from behind yesterday, Japan did not leave anything to chance as they defeat France 7-0 in five innings. Japan scored the bulk of their runs in the second innings as they pieced together five hits to bring the game to 6-0. In the third, Natsuko Sugama doubled allowing Mana Atsumi to cross home and drive the score to 7-0. France was unable to reach base in the following two innings, causing the game to end early. Great Britain routs their neighbor island 15-0 in four innings to close out the preliminary round for each team. Eight British crossed home, while six were credited with RBIs. The Canadian Women’s National Team finished first place in Pool D by defeating Uganda 10-0 in four innings at the WBSC Women’s World Softball Championship. Jenn Salling paced the offence with a three-run homerun – her third of the tournament – and an RBI triple while Karissa Hovinga fired a four inning perfect game.
